PPE through examination
The Mast and Tower Safety (MATS): Basic Tower Climbing Rescue scheme is a skills based course designed to support the safety of those who work on towers and masts in the telecommunications and broadcast industry.

It provides a framework to support consistency and relevant in training provision and assessment of competence.

The course was a collaboration between Energy & Utility Skills and the industry "Mast and Tower Safety Group". The scheme will recognise the skills and knowledge required to safely and competently climb and undertake rescues from towers and masts.

This scheme covers the minimum training and assessment required for those working safely on masts and towers and incorporates the relevant requirements of HSE legislation.

On completion of this course, the candidate will be registered within the Energy & Utility Skills system. They will then receive their EUS ID card which will allow them access to Arqiva, EE, Vodafone, CTIL, Telefonica, BT, Network Rail and other members of the MATS scheme sites.
Course Details
Duration: 
1 or 2 days - depending upon requirements

Audience:
Anyone who by virtue of their work is required to carry out thorough examinations of Work At Height PPE.

Course Aim:
To provide practical experience and education to allow delegates to design and implement equipment management systems, understand relevant legislation and carry out inspections of work at height PPE.

Syllabus:
Legislation – An overview of relevant legislation
Equipment management systems – Design and implementation
Equipment inspection criteria
Equipment Identification and marking
Equipment practical inspection techniques.

Prerequisites: 
Delegates should have practical experience with the work at height PPE they will be inspecting. Where there is no experience Heightworks can arrange equipment familiarity training.

Max. Ratio: 
6 Delegates to 1 instructor.

Certification Expiry: 
The certificate is valid for a maximum of 3 years.

Throughout the course, the student will be continually assessed and expected to complete a written and practical examination.

Only on successful completion of the whole course will the candidate be issued with a certificate of competency.

This course is designed and delivered using BS8454 (code of practice for the delivery of training and education for work at height and rescue), IRATA international code of practice and equipment manufacturers technical instructions.
